Implements program #116 (children #117–#123) — architecture decision D-053 in docs/decisions.md.

What this does

The user configures an ExecutionSource once (kind codex_subscription, label, owning worker, entitlement, adoption policy — never a model slug). The worker discovers what its controlled runtime can execute and reports a bounded ModelInventory (worker-protocol v2). The server classifies against the reviewed model-tracks.json, adopts conservatively (floor-level capability inheritance only), materializes exact derived resources (<source_id>:<slug>), and the unchanged routing core selects and pins exactly as before.

  • Protocol repair (#118): explicit params {} on account/read and the first model/list page (method-specific, evidenced by the real 0.155 runtime); discriminating -32600 test coverage; the fake App Server now mirrors the real strictness.
  • Multi-account (#120): adapter KIND vs INSTANCE (codex:<source_id>), per-source controlled homes (0o700), one worker process, strict isolation, default per-source quota pools (sharing only via explicit pool id), --codex-source + official codex-login command.
  • Adoption (#119): DISCOVERED → CLASSIFIED → ROUTABLE with conservative gates; unclassified models stay visible/not-routable; Daybreak stays RESTRICTED (never materialized, never substituted); deterministic retirement after 3 authenticated misses; GPT-6 Luna/Sol/Astra catalog entries (D-033 gate exercised with dated evidence); additive ultra effort.
  • UX (#121): Sources page (label + worker → login command → models appear), label-first workers everywhere, worker authenticated (pairing) vs source auth terminology, durable UX review gate.
  • Security (#122): security_critical → independent gpt-daybreak-blue-latest review gate with SECURITY_REVIEW_UNAVAILABLE semantics; no silent substitutes.

Contract reconciliations (explicit, in D-053)

  1. D-049 ownership: administrator grants at SOURCE granularity; inventory expands the grant, adoption policy governs.
  2. M01 observation identity excludes registration-owned quota_pool_ids (pools compose from registrations; observations can never alter pool membership).

Verification

  • make check green (2022 tests + basedpyright 0/0/0), make package-check green, make guardrails green, git diff --check clean.
  • E2E acceptance (fake-runtime, real TLS/protocol): upgrade T0→T1 with ZERO config change; unknown/Daybreak exclusion; two sources one worker; exact executed-target audit.
  • Live real-runtime probe (product path): codex-cli 0.155.0-alpha.16.3 answers account/read {} → honest auth_required (pre-fix: -32600 → unknown).

Open external gates (per program contract)

  1. Authenticated live turn on Precision (official interactive login — owner-only).
  2. Independent gpt-daybreak-blue-latest security review, or SECURITY_REVIEW_UNAVAILABLE.

Frozen v1 surfaces untouched (additive effort vocabulary only). No merges, no tags, no release.

Implements program #116 (children #117–#123) — architecture decision **D-053** in `docs/decisions.md`. ## What this does The user configures an **ExecutionSource** once (kind `codex_subscription`, label, owning worker, entitlement, adoption policy — never a model slug). The worker discovers what its controlled runtime can execute and reports a bounded **ModelInventory** (worker-protocol v2). The server classifies against the reviewed `model-tracks.json`, adopts conservatively (floor-level capability inheritance only), materializes **exact derived resources** (`<source_id>:<slug>`), and the unchanged routing core selects and pins exactly as before. - **Protocol repair (#118):** explicit `params {}` on `account/read` and the first `model/list` page (method-specific, evidenced by the real 0.155 runtime); discriminating `-32600` test coverage; the fake App Server now mirrors the real strictness. - **Multi-account (#120):** adapter KIND vs INSTANCE (`codex:<source_id>`), per-source controlled homes (`0o700`), one worker process, strict isolation, default per-source quota pools (sharing only via explicit pool id), `--codex-source` + official `codex-login` command. - **Adoption (#119):** DISCOVERED → CLASSIFIED → ROUTABLE with conservative gates; unclassified models stay visible/not-routable; Daybreak stays RESTRICTED (never materialized, never substituted); deterministic retirement after 3 authenticated misses; GPT-6 Luna/Sol/Astra catalog entries (D-033 gate exercised with dated evidence); additive `ultra` effort. - **UX (#121):** Sources page (label + worker → login command → models appear), label-first workers everywhere, `worker authenticated (pairing)` vs `source auth` terminology, durable UX review gate. - **Security (#122):** `security_critical` → independent `gpt-daybreak-blue-latest` review gate with `SECURITY_REVIEW_UNAVAILABLE` semantics; no silent substitutes. ## Contract reconciliations (explicit, in D-053) 1. D-049 ownership: administrator grants at SOURCE granularity; inventory expands the grant, adoption policy governs. 2. M01 observation identity excludes registration-owned `quota_pool_ids` (pools compose from registrations; observations can never alter pool membership). ## Verification - `make check` green (2022 tests + basedpyright 0/0/0), `make package-check` green, `make guardrails` green, `git diff --check` clean. - E2E acceptance (fake-runtime, real TLS/protocol): upgrade T0→T1 with ZERO config change; unknown/Daybreak exclusion; two sources one worker; exact executed-target audit. - Live real-runtime probe (product path): `codex-cli 0.155.0-alpha.16.3` answers `account/read {}` → honest `auth_required` (pre-fix: `-32600` → `unknown`). ## Open external gates (per program contract) 1. Authenticated live turn on Precision (official interactive login — owner-only). 2. Independent `gpt-daybreak-blue-latest` security review, or `SECURITY_REVIEW_UNAVAILABLE`. Frozen v1 surfaces untouched (additive effort vocabulary only). No merges, no tags, no release.
codex-cli 0.155 rejects an absent params member on these methods with
JSON-RPC -32600 (live evidence 2026-09-24), degrading every probe to
auth_unverified/unknown health on a logged-in controlled home. The
adapter now sends the evidenced method-specific shapes: account/read and
the first model/list page carry params {}, later pages carry
{"cursor": ...}. No global params-forcing. The fake App Server now
mirrors the real 0.155 strictness, so a wire-shape regression fails the
suite; new tests pin the exact first-page, later-page and -32600 shapes.
ModelInventory (schema_version 1) is the typed, bounded, credential-free
discovery document carried by worker-protocol v2 state reports: per
source — adapter instance id, closed auth-state vocabulary, runtime
name/version, and per-model slug plus runtime-reported reasoning efforts
(safe identifiers, never forced into a static vocabulary). Hard bounds
on sources/models/efforts; strict JSON parsing rejects duplicate keys,
unknown keys and future versions; no field can carry credentials or
account metadata.

model-tracks.json is the reviewed track registry (D-053): stable
capability families over changing slugs (openai/luna, sol, astra;
restricted daybreak), conservative per-track capability floors with
dated provenance, structural classification (ambiguous matches fail
closed; unknown slugs stay unclassified). Exact catalog entries always
take precedence over track floors. Mapped into wheel/sdist like the
other root artifacts.
Adapter KIND is now separate from adapter INSTANCE: CodexLocalAdapter
gains source mode (adapter id codex:<source_id>, per-source controlled
home under codex-sources/<source_id>/ 0o700) and discovers its served
resources from its own runtime observation — handshake, account/read
and bounded model/list, all under the existing session budgets. The
legacy single-resource mode (bare 'codex' id, configured model) is
byte-unchanged.

Worker protocol v2: state reports carry an optional bounded inventories
section (validated by the ModelInventory contract, bounded at 8
documents, each named to the authenticated worker). The server still
accepts v1 workers (negotiation SERVER_SUPPORTED_PROTOCOL_VERSIONS=(2,1));
a v2 worker against a v1 server fails cleanly at the handshake — server
deploys first. Auth states use the closed inventory vocabulary
(authenticated/auth_required/unverified/unavailable); discovery
failures isolate to the source and never reach the report loop.

New worker surface: run --codex-source <id> (repeatable) and
codex-login --source <id>, which creates the controlled home and runs
the OFFICIAL codex login against it (stdio inherited; no token is ever
read or copied).
The administrator configuration gains the additive 'sources' domain
(config schema v2; v1 documents stay valid): source_id, kind
(codex_subscription), label, owning worker_id, entitlement, optional
explicit quota_pool_id, auto-adopt switch and allowed-tracks narrowing.
Hand-made '<source_id>:<slug>' resource ids are rejected — that
namespace belongs to discovery.

SourceRegistry (execution_sources.py, in-memory derived state per
D-041/D-053) applies validated inventory reports: classification
against the reviewed track registry; DISCOVERED (unknown slugs) and
RESTRICTED (Daybreak) stay visible but never materialized; adoption
gates require a known standard track, an approved floor, an
authenticated source and policy permission. Adopted models become
exact derived resources (<source_id>:<slug>, worker_bridged, source
entitlement, per-source quota pool by default). Disappearance keeps
the registration until RETIRE_AFTER_MISSES=3 consecutive authenticated
observations retire it — staleness, never substitution, in between.

The catalog view gains conservative track-floor entries for adopted
models: floor ratings with model-tracks.json provenance, reasoning
support evidenced by the runtime's own listing, hard properties and
capacity applicability honestly UNKNOWN. Exact reviewed entries always
win. model-catalog.json v4 adds the owner-reviewable GPT-6
Luna/Sol/Astra entries (dated 2026-09-24 live-inventory evidence;
D-033 Astra gate reconciled); GPT-5.6 entries unchanged. The
reasoning-effort vocabulary extends additively with 'ultra' (selector
tuple and execution-surface ingress).

Composition: derived resources dispatch to their source's adapter
instance (codex:<source_id>) and receive the reviewed codex translation
cells; ownership resolves to the source's configured worker (the D-049
amendment is administrator-granted at source granularity).
Sources page (/admin/sources, /control/sources GET/POST/DELETE): add a
Codex source by label + owning worker — the source_id derives from the
label and the user never configures a model slug; each row shows the
source auth state, detected models with per-model state, the
routable/restricted/error counts, and the ONE login command to run on
the worker host. The page states explicitly that 'source auth' is the
PROVIDER account sign-in, distinct from the worker pairing.

Worker label-first everywhere: the workers page and the resource-add
dropdown show the friendly label before the technical id, and the
doctor renders 'worker <label> (<id>)'. The resources ladder renders
'worker authenticated (pairing)' so worker pairing is never mistaken
for provider authentication.

Governance (durable): AGENTS.md and docs/llm-operating-policy.md make
UX a mandatory review dimension ('UX impact: none' or a ten-point
assessment; a material UX regression is CHANGES_REQUESTED) and freeze
the security-critical review gate: security_critical -> independent
gpt-daybreak-blue-latest review; SECURITY_REVIEW_UNAVAILABLE when the
restricted access cannot be exercised; no substitute model closes the
gate; the multi-stage review itself stays outside the Routing Core.
feat: sources e2e acceptance, protocol v2 polish and gate compliance (issues #116-#123)

Full-stack acceptance for the D-053 program: upgrade T0->T1 with zero
configuration change, unknown-model/restricted-model exclusion, two
independent Codex sources in one worker process with per-source home
isolation and distinct quota pools, and exact executed-target audit.

- endpoint: validated inventories apply BEFORE the resource section so
adoption registers derived resources inside one report; source-derived
snapshots of a configured (authenticated) worker that are not adopted
are dropped from the applied set (state lives in the source view),
keeping every other strictness of the M01 atomic rejection intact.
- resource_state: observation identity matching excludes registration-
owned quota pools (D-053 reconciliation note); registry read model
  unchanged (pools compose from registrations).
- derived resources carry the evidenced CODEX SURFACE capability facts
(272k context, streaming, reasoning controls; tool calls false).
- package manifest: model-tracks.json joins wheel/sdist checks.
- typing-only pass to restore the zero-warning basedpyright gate.
fix: remediation from the independent review of the sources program (issues #116-#123)
Some checks failed
ci / check (pull_request) Has been cancelled

Merge blocker 1 — slug-bound contract mismatch: the derived-id length
bound now lives in the INVENTORY contract (SLUG_MAX_LENGTH=40), so a
listing carrying an over-long slug fails the whole observation closed
at the worker (unverified, no models) and can never reach adoption;
adoption mutates adopted-state only after the derived id exists; a
server-side sink failure is a non-fatal ERR_INTERNAL frame exactly like
the resource section — the session thread can no longer die unhandled.

Merge blocker 2 — the sources page now shows BOTH worker-side actions
(codex-login AND run --codex-source) at the source and in the page
copy; login alone never materializes models.

Review defers fixed in the same pass: ':' rejected in source_id; the
derived-namespace guard covers every configured resource (not only
worker-bound); max 8 sources per worker (protocol inventory cap);
codex_subscription entitlement pinned to subscription_included; strict
canonical-timestamp regex; dead CODEX_SURFACE_CAPABILITIES duplicate
removed; ASCII-folding for UI label->id derivation; discriminating
tests for the slug bound, the fail-closed listing drift and the
raising-sink session survival.

Cross-section atomicity (inventory vs resource section) stays a
recorded DEFER with the protocol-doc wording corrected.

Independent review (GLM-5.3-Flash, thinking=MAX) — remediation recorded

Verdict was CHANGES_REQUESTED with 2 merge blockers + 8 defers. One remediation pass landed in 786e616; the reviewed head is now 786e616.

Blocker 1 (slug-bound poisoning + session death) — fixed at all three layers:

  • The derived-id length bound moved into the inventory contract itself (SLUG_MAX_LENGTH = 40): a listing carrying an over-long slug is structural drift and fails the WHOLE observation closed at the worker (unverified, no models) — discriminatingly tested.
  • Adoption no longer mutates adopted before the derived id exists.
  • A server-side sink failure is now a non-fatal ERR_INTERNAL frame exactly like the resource section — the session thread can no longer die unhandled; test added asserting session survival and continued answerability.

Blocker 2 (models never appear after login) — the sources page and sources_view now surface BOTH worker-side actions (codex-login --source <id> AND run --codex-source <id>), in the row and the page copy.

Defers fixed in the same pass: : rejected in source_id; derived-namespace guard covers every configured resource; max 8 sources per worker (protocol inventory cap); codex_subscription entitlement pinned to subscription_included; strict canonical-timestamp regex; dead CODEX_SURFACE_CAPABILITIES duplicate deleted; ASCII-folding for label→id derivation; new discriminating tests throughout.

Defers recorded (open, non-blocking): cross-section atomicity (inventory applied before resource-section rejection — within the source grant, protocol-doc wording updated); worker→v1-only-server covered at the negotiate_version unit level only.

Post-remediation gates: make check green (2026 tests; one load-sensitive test_e2e_execution scenario-11 cancellation flake observed once under full-suite pressure — module and coordinator untouched by this branch, 9/9 green in isolation and suite reruns; no retry added, recorded per the no-flake policy), basedpyright 0/0/0, package-check re-run in progress, git diff --check clean.

UX impact: assessed per the new mandatory gate — the reviewer's material UX finding (silent stall after login) is fixed with the two-command remediation; label-first and auth-terminology items pass.

Precision hosts are operated over SSH, so the ONE explicit login per
source now uses the official CLI's device-auth mode — `codex login
--device-auth`, verified against the installed codex-cli
0.155.0-alpha.16.3 (login --help advertises it; the flow prints
https://auth.openai.com/codex/device plus a one-time code and polls —
no localhost callback server, no browser on the host). The capability
is probed on the INSTALLED CLI at run time and there are NO fallbacks:
never the browser/localhost login, never the legacy controlled `codex`
home, never ~/.codex, and never any credential copy/import/inspection
between homes. A CLI without the mode, or an incomplete login, fails
closed with an actionable message; the source stays auth_required.

The sources page copy now explains the SSH device-code flow (complete
the code in any browser). Discriminating tests: the exact two-invocation
shape (capability probe then device login), the no-fallback gate on an
old CLI, per-source home isolation, env naming only the source's own
home, no credential-stdin modes on the argv, refused-login closure
(auth_required, no models, no credential material), and independent
logins for a second source.

Continuation: develop merge + SSH-safe source authentication + live acceptance evidence

Canonical merge. origin/develop @ cebd1d64 (PR #125, operational-property governance) merged into program/dynamic-execution-sources (18370ee). Documentation conflicts auto-resolved: AGENTS.md and docs/llm-operating-policy.md now carry BOTH #125's preserve-proven-operational-properties principle / operational-UX-and-compatibility review AND #124's mandatory UX review dimension + security-critical Daybreak gate — no duplication. Post-merge make check green (basedpyright 0/0/0).

SSH-safe authentication correction (implemented, 46d02df). The exact supported invocation was VERIFIED from the installed runtime, not assumed: codex-cli 0.155.0-alpha.16.3 login --help advertises --device-auth, and the flow was exercised live (prints https://auth.openai.com/codex/device + a one-time code, polls — no localhost callback, no browser on the host). run_official_codex_login now: creates/validates the SOURCE's own controlled home (codex-sources/<source_id>/, 0o700); probes the installed CLI for the SSH-safe mode (fail-closed if absent — the browser/localhost login is NEVER attempted); runs login --device-auth with CODEX_HOME bound to that home; and on any refusal leaves the source auth_required with an actionable message. No fallback to the legacy codex home, none to ~/.codex, and no credential is ever copied/imported/inspected between homes. Discriminating tests pin the exact two-invocation shape (probe → device login), the no-fallback gate, per-source isolation, env naming only the source home, no --with-api-key/--with-access-token argv, refused-login closure, and independent logins per source.

Live acceptance evidence (real runtime, real SSH flow, twice). Fresh source home; one explicit scarcity-router-worker codex-login --source personal-openai: the device code printed on the SSH terminal; the code expired without the browser step (owner unavailable) and the CLI timed out — the fail-closed contract held both times: exit nonzero, the actionable "source stays closed (auth_required)" remediation printed, no credential material in the home, and the product-path probe afterwards reports auth_required / zero models / empty derived resources. What remains for full authenticated acceptance is exactly one owner browser step (the printed URL + code) followed by product-path discovery and one real turn — the flow is proven up to that step and fails closed without it.

PR left open; not merged. Stopping here for fresh independent review of the new head 18370ee.

Fresh independent review (GLM-5.3-Flash, thinking=MAX) of continuation head 18370ee

VERDICT: APPROVE (5 non-blocking DEFERs).

Key confirmations:

  • The SSH-safe login flow is correct and fail-closed at every step; no path exists to the browser/localhost login, the legacy codex home, or ~/.codex; no credential material is ever read/copied/parsed between homes. The reviewer independently re-verified the installed CLI advertises --device-auth.
  • Closure is honest at the right trust boundary: the login's exit code grants nothing; source state re-derives per observation from the runtime itself (auth_required, zero models) — proven by a real adapter observation over the refused-login state, not a mock.
  • The develop merge is doc-only and purely additive; both governance sets (#125 operational-property preservation + operational-UX review; #124 mandatory UX dimension + Daybreak gate) coexist without duplication or contradiction.
  • SourceLoginTests discriminate the no-fallback property via exact invocation counts and exact-equality env assertions.
  • #125's own discipline is satisfied: 46d02df preserved every proven operational property of the SSH working path and repaired the one violated property (headless auth) with the vendor's supported mode, verified against the installed binary.

Recorded DEFERs (non-blocking): (1) CodexIneligible from a corrupt home surfaces as a traceback instead of a clean CLI message; (2) capability probe discards stderr and has no timeout (safe direction, but a hung binary would hang the probe); (3) the per-worker source cap hardcodes 8 instead of importing MAX_INVENTORIES_PER_REPORT; (4) missing tests for the probe-failure branch and hostile inherited CODEX_HOME override; (5) mid-loop sink failure wording overstates per-report atomicity (per-inventory validation still holds, retry converges).

Acceptance status: SSH-safe flow verified live end to end up to the owner's one browser step (two live device-code cycles; timeout fail-closed proven twice; no credential residue; product-path probe reports auth_required). The authenticated turn remains gated on that single owner step. PR #124 left open for owner merge — not merged.

Authenticated acceptance attempt — blocked at the one owner step; source correctly stays closed

Diagnosis of the completed login. The login the owner completed at 20:37 CEST landed in ~/.codex/auth.json (a default-environment codex login), NOT in the controlled source home. Per the program's hard rules (no ~/.codex fallback, no credential copy/import/inspection between homes), Scarcity Router must not adopt it — and did not. codex login status with CODEX_HOME bound to the source home reports Not logged in; the product-path probe reports auth_required, zero models, zero derived resources. Fail-closed verified.

Three controlled-home device codes were issued and expired unused (W3XH-LR8CI, W5QP-1SVNH, XO4R-8ZO8N — each a fresh, correctly-bound codex-login --source personal-openai run). Every timeout exercised the fail-closed contract live: exit nonzero, actionable remediation printed, no credential residue in the home.

Consequence per the owner's own gating: the authenticated live turn cannot run, therefore the gpt-daybreak-blue-latest review cannot run either (still SECURITY_REVIEW_UNAVAILABLE), therefore the final gates→merge condition is NOT met. PR #124 stays open and unmerged.

Exact resume path (two steps, ~2 minutes while a code is live):

  1. On Precision, run: scarcity-router-worker codex-login --source personal-openai — a fresh https://auth.openai.com/codex/device URL + code prints (do NOT run bare codex login; that writes ~/.codex, which the router will never read).
  2. Complete the code in any browser within 15 minutes, then: scarcity-router-worker run --codex-source personal-openai.

When that login completes, the remaining acceptance (product-path discovery → one real authenticated turn → Daybreak review attempt → final gates → owner-authorized merge) can proceed immediately.

## Authenticated acceptance attempt — blocked at the one owner step; source correctly stays closed **Diagnosis of the completed login.** The login the owner completed at 20:37 CEST landed in `~/.codex/auth.json` (a default-environment `codex login`), NOT in the controlled source home. Per the program's hard rules (no `~/.codex` fallback, no credential copy/import/inspection between homes), Scarcity Router must not adopt it — and did not. `codex login status` with `CODEX_HOME` bound to the source home reports **Not logged in**; the product-path probe reports `auth_required`, zero models, zero derived resources. Fail-closed verified. **Three controlled-home device codes were issued and expired unused** (`W3XH-LR8CI`, `W5QP-1SVNH`, `XO4R-8ZO8N` — each a fresh, correctly-bound `codex-login --source personal-openai` run). Every timeout exercised the fail-closed contract live: exit nonzero, actionable remediation printed, no credential residue in the home. **Consequence per the owner's own gating:** the authenticated live turn cannot run, therefore the `gpt-daybreak-blue-latest` review cannot run either (still `SECURITY_REVIEW_UNAVAILABLE`), therefore the final gates→merge condition is NOT met. **PR #124 stays open and unmerged.** **Exact resume path (two steps, ~2 minutes while a code is live):** 1. On Precision, run: `scarcity-router-worker codex-login --source personal-openai` — a fresh `https://auth.openai.com/codex/device` URL + code prints (do NOT run bare `codex login`; that writes `~/.codex`, which the router will never read). 2. Complete the code in any browser within 15 minutes, then: `scarcity-router-worker run --codex-source personal-openai`. When that login completes, the remaining acceptance (product-path discovery → one real authenticated turn → Daybreak review attempt → final gates → owner-authorized merge) can proceed immediately.

Authenticated live turn: PASS. Daybreak review: FAIL (5 blockers) — remediation cycle starting

Authenticated live turn (real, end to end): PASS. With the owner-completed device login in the controlled home: product-path discovery reported authenticated with the live inventory (5 routable: gpt-5.6-luna/sol, gpt-6-luna/sol/astra; 1 restricted: gpt-daybreak-blue-latest; 2 discovered: gpt-5.5, gpt-5.6-terra). One real request through the composed server + real worker + real Codex: POST /v1/chat/completions pinned sr-pin:personal-openai:gpt-6-sol/openai/gpt-6-sol/high → 200, content LIVE-ACCEPTANCE-OK, real provider usage (prompt 18333 / completion 11 tokens), audit executed_target == the pin exactly (personal-openai:gpt-6-sol, gpt-6-sol, high).

Daybreak review: RAN (access confirmed: gpt-daybreak-blue-latest executed in the controlled home) and returned DAYBREAK-VERDICT: FAIL with 5 reproduced blockers — the gate caught real defects:

  1. Cross-worker inventory mutation: a report's inventories are never checked against the source's configured worker — any authenticated worker can poison/retire another worker's source.
  2. Effort substitution: a high pin with request reasoning_effort=low dispatches low while audit records high (coordinator dispatches the request effort, not the selected identity's variant).
  3. Derived resources bind every calibrated variant regardless of advertised efforts; stale-healthy observations persist after contradictory inventory/auth evidence.
  4. Unbounded retained state: retired grows without a lifetime cap; observations for retired resources persist.
  5. Every inventory rebuild resets gateway concurrency enforcement (fresh semaphores while executions are in flight).

Remediation cycle starting now (authorized: concrete merge blockers found). PR stays open and unmerged until all five are fixed, gates re-run, and the Daybreak review re-passes.

fix: Daybreak security review remediations (5 blockers, program #116)
Some checks failed
ci / check (pull_request) Failing after 10m55s
cd76abcd0c
1. Cross-worker inventory mutation: every source named by a state
report's inventory must be configured on the authenticated worker —
otherwise the whole report is rejected (non-fatal error frame); a
worker can no longer adopt, poison or retire another worker's source.

2. Effort substitution on pins: a pinned request is admission-only — a
request reasoning_effort conflicting with the pinned variant is a typed
400 (effort_conflicts_with_target) BEFORE dispatch, and the dispatched
effort is the pinned variant. Non-pinned profile requests keep the
carried-control semantics (existing contract, tests unchanged).

3. Per-advertised-effort derived resources: one exact variant-qualified
resource per (source, model, advertised effort) — a resource can never
bind a variant its runtime did not advertise; the resource id carries
the effort (personal-openai:gpt-6-sol:high). Controlled-home config
validation becomes containment-based (generated notice + project-trust
entries confined to the source's own scratch root) so the REAL runtime's
legitimate appended state no longer invalidates the home, while foreign
entries are dropped on ensure.

4. Bounded retained state: retirement history capped at 64 entries per
source (oldest dropped first).

5. Concurrency enforcement survives application rebuilds: the admission
semaphore and per-client counters are carried over from the replaced
application when limits are unchanged, so inventory-driven rebuilds can
no longer reset in-flight accounting.
fix: Daybreak re-review remediations (5 blockers, round 2)
All checks were successful
ci / check (pull_request) Successful in 7m44s
db5f954fc7
1. Controlled-home config containment hardened: TOML is parsed and only
the generated notice plus project-trust tables whose paths resolve under
the source's own scratch root are kept; any other table (e.g. injected
mcp_servers) or prefix-trick path regenerates the config. Credentials
are never touched.
2. Derived resource ids: the effort suffix is accounted for in the
safe-id length bound (SLUG_MAX_LENGTH 35), per-effort combos exceeding
64 chars are rejected at the contract, and adoption mutates state only
after the derived id validates.
3. Retired observations pruned: accepted snapshots for resources that
are no longer registered are dropped from the server's observation
cache, so retirement cannot leak unbounded retained state.
4. Auth-loss no longer masked: source-derived snapshots in the SAME
report are refreshed before snapshot collection, and the server purges
observations for sources whose inventory reports non-authenticated
state, so a closed source can never look available.
5. Effort binding generalized: for EVERY routed target with a selected
variant, the dispatched effort is the selected variant; conflicting
request efforts are typed 400 rejections before dispatch (pins), and
profile requests keep carried-control semantics only for variant-less
targets. Concurrency enforcement carries across application rebuilds.

Daybreak security review round 2 — executed in 3 segmented passes (gpt-daybreak-blue-latest, real controlled home). VERDICT: FAIL

The model executed successfully through the adapter's managed session path (network disabled, scratch-cwd isolation). Findings, verbatim scope per segment:

Segment 1 (fix verification + isolation + source-id + spoofing):

  • [BLOCKER] Config containment bypassable: _config_is_contained accepts a notice followed by [mcp_servers.evil]; project-trust containment uses string-prefix matching (scratch-elsewhere passes); tree creation/validation follow symlinks, so one source dir pointing at another collapses both CODEX_HOMEs (worker_codex_adapter.py:550-578, 614-632; worker_identity_store.py:562-575).
  • [BLOCKER] SLUG_MAX_LENGTH omits the effort suffix: <source>:<slug>:medium can exceed the 64-char safe-id bound; adoption mutates state.adopted before id validation (model_inventory.py:68-97; execution_sources.py:253-270); worker preflight checks only source+slug.
  • [BLOCKER] Attacker-sized lists are eagerly materialized before the 8/64-element caps run (model_inventory.py:239-252, 312-324, 364-381, 455-465) — CPU/memory amplification via 16 MiB frames.
  • [BLOCKER] Duplicate sources across multiple inventory documents in ONE state report are not deduplicated: three empty inventories for the same source in one frame advance the miss counter 3× and immediately retire its resources (model_inventory.py:415-420; worker_protocol.py:920-939; worker_endpoint.py:561-603; execution_sources.py:277-293).
  • [BLOCKER] display_name is a 128-char free-text carrier that can hold emails/account-ids/token fragments; the official producer omits it but the wire contract does not enforce that (model_inventory.py:176-215, 230-237).

Segment 2 (quota pools, ownership, metadata, audit, TLS):

  • [BLOCKER] Observation snapshots can smuggle arbitrary quota_pool_ids: observation matching excludes pools (by design) but the stored/serialized snapshot retains the worker-supplied values, producing contradictory registry documents (resource_state.py:682-704, 1142-1155, 1596-1612).

Segment 3 (exact execution, auth honesty, SSH login):

  • [BLOCKER] Effort binding not enforced end-to-end: with request effort omitted, dispatch forwards None and the turn omits effort entirely (runtime default executes) while audit records the pinned variant; legacy codex mode never binds the selected variant; a compromised coordinator could send variant=high + effort=low — the source branch fills absent efforts but never rejects present mismatches; audit copies selected→executed before dispatch (gateway_coordinator.py:696-720, 711-724; worker_codex_adapter.py:1749-1752, 1779-1790, 2068-2069).
  • [BLOCKER] Provider-auth loss can arrive alongside a stale healthy snapshot in the SAME report: snapshots are collected before the inventory refresh, so the server's purge is undone by the report's own snapshots — a closed source can look routable for up to ~600s (worker_client.py:872-940; control_api.py:480-518; execution_sources.py TTLs).
  • [BLOCKER] Config containment (segment 3, confirming segment 1): notice-prefix + lexical startswith checks accept injected [mcp_servers.*] and prefix-trick paths; the rewrite path preserves arbitrary pre-project content (worker_codex_adapter.py:515-520, 568-578, 580-612).
  • [NOTE] SSH-safe device-auth login verified: no browser/localhost, legacy-home, or ~/.codex fallback found (worker_codex_adapter.py:2478-2549).
  • [NOTE] Segment 1's inspection itself was partly blocked by the WSLg/bubblewrap host-mount sandbox failure — environment artifact, flagged as such by the reviewer.

Status

  • Authenticated live turn: PASS (evidence in the earlier comment).
  • Daybreak review: FAIL — 8 blockers. The security gate remains OPEN; per the program contract, PR #124 is not merged and the final-gates→merge condition is not met.

The full reviewer output is preserved at /tmp/daybreak-review/segmented-output.md and summarized here as the durable record. Next step (awaiting owner direction given scope): a dedicated remediation cycle for the eight blockers — config-containment hardening (real TOML allowlist + symlink-resistant validation), combined-id length accounting, eager-materialization bounds, cross-report duplicate handling, quota-pool observation stripping, display_name removal or strict allowlist, end-to-end effort binding (including legacy mode and audit truthfulness), and snapshot/inventory ordering (refresh before collection).

- B3: cardinality bounds run BEFORE materializing attacker-controlled
effort/model/source objects in the inventory contract.
- B8 (worker half): source inventories refresh BEFORE snapshot
collection, and reported_at is captured after the refresh so a report
can never pair fresh-healthy snapshots with auth loss or carry a
  future-dated observation.
- B8 (server half): source-derived snapshots whose source inventory is
not authenticated in the same report are dropped at the endpoint.
- B4: duplicate source inventories across one state report are rejected
  whole (miss counters cannot multi-count).
- B2: the effort suffix is accounted for in the derived-id bound

- B1: controlled-home config containment is TOML-parsed — only the
generated notice plus [projects] tables whose paths resolve under the
source's own scratch root survive; any other construct (mcp_servers,
plugins, foreign paths) is dropped or invalidates the home. The home,
scratch root and config are lstat-validated (symlink aliasing cannot
collapse two sources' homes). Pristine configs (no projects key) and
vendor-reordered files validate; credentials are never read.
- B2: the effort suffix is inside the derived-id bound
  (SLUG_MAX_LENGTH=35; 20+1+35+1+7=64) and every per-effort id is
  validated BEFORE adoption mutates state.
- B3: source/model/effort cardinality bounds run before materializing
  attacker-controlled objects.
- B4: a source may occur at most once across a whole state report;
duplicates reject the report (miss counters cannot multi-count).
- B5: stored observations are canonicalized to the registration
identity — worker-supplied quota_pool_ids never survive in serialized
  state.
- B6: display_name is removed from the inventory wire contract — no
free-text carrier can smuggle account-identifying metadata.
- B7: for effort-qualified resources (derived source resources), the
bound variant is dispatched when the request omits an effort and
  conflicting request efforts are typed 400 rejections before dispatch;
the codex adapter likewise binds/rejects, so the audited variant is
always the executed effort. Plain resources keep carried-control
semantics (preset wire mapping remains the authority).
- B8: source inventories refresh BEFORE snapshot collection and
reported_at is captured after the refresh; the endpoint drops
source-derived snapshots whose source inventory is unauthenticated in
the same report — auth loss invalidates stale routability.

Authorized security-remediation pass complete — head 9789c67; Daybreak verification verdict and final status

All eight blocker classes from the durable Daybreak record were remediated, each with a discriminating regression that fails on the reviewed head 4d2d238 and passes after:

  1. Controlled-home isolation — config containment is TOML-parsed (stdlib tomllib): only the generated notice plus [projects] tables survive; every project path must RESOLVE under the source's own scratch root (prefix tricks rejected); project tables accept only trust_level (nested [...mcp_servers.*] injection rejected — found by the verification pass and closed in the same pass); homes/scratch/config are lstat-validated so symlink aliasing cannot collapse two sources' homes. Foreign content resets the config to the pristine notice; credentials are never read or rewritten.
  2. Derived-id bounds / atomic adoption — SLUG_MAX_LENGTH=35 (20+1+35+1+7=64 with the effort suffix); every per-effort id is validated BEFORE adoption mutates adopted/routable state.
  3. Bounds before materialization — effort/model/source cardinality caps run before any attacker-controlled object is constructed.
  4. Cross-report duplicates — a source may occur at most once across an ENTIRE state report; duplicates reject the report, so miss counters cannot multi-count into instant retirement.
  5. Quota-pool authority — stored observations are canonicalized to the registration identity; worker-supplied quota_pool_ids can never survive into serialized/read-model state.
  6. Metadata-free contract — display_name removed from the inventory wire contract; unknown keys fail closed, so no free-text carrier exists.
  7. Exact effort binding — for effort-qualified resources (identity variant set), the coordinator binds the variant when the request omits effort and rejects conflicts (400 effort_conflicts_with_target) BEFORE dispatch; the codex adapter binds/rejects likewise; audit selected==executed. Variant-less resources (loopback Ollama) keep carried-control semantics — preset wire mapping stays authoritative (verified: the Ollama preset has no evidenced mapping for max).
  8. Auth-loss vs stale snapshots — inventories refresh BEFORE snapshot collection and reported_at is captured after the refresh (a report can never pair fresh-healthy snapshots with auth loss, nor carry a future-dated observation); the endpoint additionally drops source-derived snapshots whose source inventory is unauthenticated in the same report.

Gates at 9789c67: make check green (2,044 tests, basedpyright 0/0/0), make package-check green, make guardrails green, git diff --check clean. One pre-existing load-sensitive cancellation flake (scenario_11) appeared once under full-suite pressure — 3/3 green in isolation, module untouched, no retry added.

Daybreak narrow verification — executed but environmentally crippled. gpt-daybreak-blue-latest ran (adapter-session path), verified blockers 2 and 3 VERIFIED, then its own bubblewrap sandbox failed on the WSLg host-mount (/mnt/wslg/distro — the environment artifact excluded from remediation), after which it repeated stale pre-remediation findings with old line numbers rather than inspecting the current code. Its one genuine new technical point — nested TOML tables under contained paths — was real and is now closed (see fix 1 + regressions).

Per the owner's instruction, I am stopping here and escalating: the single authorized verification pass was performed but could not complete honestly on this host due to the sandbox environment artifact, so a clean verdict could not be recorded. PR #124 stays open and unmerged at 9789c67. Options for the owner: (a) run the same narrow verification charter (preserved in this comment history / /tmp/daybreak-review/charter.md) on a host without the WSLg bubblewrap issue; or (b) accept the documented evidence (all eight blocker classes closed with discriminating tests, full gates green, one environment-blocked verification) and decide the merge directly.

MERGED — owner-authorized. PR #124 merged into develop as merge commit a4370f0 from head 9789c67 (exactly the authorized head).

Preconditions verified at merge time, in a clean worktree at 9789c67:

  • make check: 2,044 tests, OK (the local checkout's failing pre-merge run was caused by uncommitted owner WIP present in the working tree — D-054 effort-restriction edits, intentionally left untouched and excluded from this merge; the clean worktree proved the committed head is green).
  • make package-check: PASS. make guardrails: PASS. basedpyright: 0 errors / 0 warnings. git diff --check: clean.

Recorded per the owner's exception: the final Daybreak remediation verification was incomplete due to the known WSLg/bubblewrap reviewer-environment failure — this is an owner-approved waiver and is NOT recorded as a Daybreak PASS. All eight blocker classes were closed with discriminating regressions and bounded evidence (owner-accepted).

**MERGED — owner-authorized.** PR #124 merged into `develop` as merge commit `a4370f0` from head `9789c67` (exactly the authorized head). Preconditions verified at merge time, in a clean worktree at `9789c67`: - `make check`: **2,044 tests, OK** (the local checkout's failing pre-merge run was caused by uncommitted owner WIP present in the working tree — D-054 effort-restriction edits, intentionally left untouched and excluded from this merge; the clean worktree proved the committed head is green). - `make package-check`: PASS. `make guardrails`: PASS. basedpyright: 0 errors / 0 warnings. `git diff --check`: clean. Recorded per the owner's exception: the final Daybreak remediation verification was **incomplete due to the known WSLg/bubblewrap reviewer-environment failure** — this is an owner-approved waiver and is **NOT recorded as a Daybreak PASS**. All eight blocker classes were closed with discriminating regressions and bounded evidence (owner-accepted). No merge to `main`, no release, no deployment. Program #116 children (#117–#123) can be closed at the owner's leisure.
